I have read so many books, watched TV segments and read articles on how to find flattering clothes for different figure issues I just want to scream "Stop telling me to avoid ankle strap shoes and tell me something I don't know!" I have decided the most practical way to find out what works for my wardrobe isn't by looking inside a book, it's by looking inside my closet.
New York & Company Trench for $69.95
Before I go shopping for new clothes I believe it's helpful to figure out what is working with the clothes I already have. It takes just a few minutes to glance at the clothes in your closet to see if their are any obvious patterns. First of all you are to ignore the frumpy clothes that you wear when you don't care what you look like. Now focus on the clothes that make you feel good and look good when you wear them. Take a few favorites out of the closet and lie them on your bed if that helps. Notice similarities between the pieces. Are they similar in color or brightness? Are they similar in cut, fabric or texture? Keep the specific elements that appeal to you in mind when you go shopping for clothes. If you are looking at a top in a cut that you don't know if it is flattering or not, look at other aspects of the top such as color and fabric. If the color and fabric are ones you enjoy wearing, try the top on. Feel free to try new things when shopping for clothes, as long as you can look at the item and quickly identify at least two elements of the item that are consistent with the clothes you already wear and love.
