The Simple Dollar: How One Man Wiped Out His Debts and Achieved the Life of His Dreams is not a typical book about creating a budget and doing a lot of other boring tedious stuff in an effort to become more financially well off. In a nutshell, the theme of this book is about how to develop a better relationship with m0ney and live richly by cultivating relationships and experiences that enrich your life beyond money. The book really has nothing new to say, and yet I enjoyed reading it. The common sense approach Trent Hamm uses to finances covers everything from automatic savings, goal setting, retirement to giving up things that offer very little now so you can put money towards something meaningful to you, such as quitting your job to start a new career.
If I had to categorize this book I would not classify it as a financial management book. Instead I would call it a financial motivational book that encourages the reader to look at their relationship with money and look at the thoughts, routines and personal relationships that affect how and why we spend. Ultimately the book encourages us to have a bigger vision for our life that goes far beyond just getting by and paying our bills.
