Scents of the Season

Holiday Get Togethers are in the Bag

Oriental_trading_company_gift_bag_2  Underneath all the pretty ribbon and gaudy wrapping paper holiday wrap parties are a lot of work disguised as a party. Traditional holiday wrap parties involved guests hauling their gifts to people not invited to the wrap party to the house of a host, wrapping a bunch of gifts and then the guests haul the gifts they wrapped back to the their own home. During one of the busiest times of the year guests should not be forced to haul a bunch of packages back and forth. That’s what the UPS guy is for.  Read the rest of this article.

Oriental_trading_company_gift_bag_2Underneath all the pretty ribbon and gaudy wrapping paper holiday wrap parties are a lot of work disguised as a party.

Lighten the load for your guest with a modern twist on the traditional wrap party. Attach a completed invitation to an empty paper gift bag with the caption like “A good time is in the bag” or “You are invited to my holiday bag lady party” and mail it out at least two weeks before the party.  On the invitation explain to the guests that the purpose of the party is to decorate gift bags that the can later use for their holiday gifts. Guest can bring old holiday cards with nothing written on the back side of the picture, glue stick, stamps, paints, wrapping paper remnants too small to wrap anything can be cut into strips and used like ribbon, or other small objects that could be attached to a gift bag.

As the host you will be supplying plain bags and glue sticks if no one else is bringing those items. Bargain bags can be bought in bulk through Orientaltradingcompany.com or your local dollar store. Glossy bags may not absorb decorative paint as well so be sure at least some of the bags don’t have a glossy finish if you are intending to paint.

Now you are ready to party. Set up an area, preferably a large table, with scissors and supplies. One thing you won’t have to worry about as a hostess is finding the perfect party favor.  At this party the guests are actually creating their own party favors. Be sure to have at least three bags of different sizes for each guest. Have a few snacks, both the healthy and indulgent kind, and some hot drinks like cider or cocoa near the party table. Put on some holiday music. Turn listening to instrumental holiday music into a game by having guests name that tune or try to sing as many lyrics as they can remember while they create their one of a kind gift bags.

Use Your Computer to Save Cash Over the Holidays

The holidays are a time of year when holiday cheer is often followed by the holiday hangover of credit card debt. One of the best tools for keeping holiday debt down is a personal computer. A little computer savvy and a basic printer can help you spend less and spend smarter.

Shoving your way through stressed out shoppers clogging the store aisles while the most irritating version ever of Deck the Halls plays repeatedly over the store speakers is no way to shop. Sit back, relax, boot up the old laptop and use some of that gas money you are saving toward your credit card bill. Compare prices on Bizrate.com or MySimon.com to find out where the best deals are. Web sites such as Amazon.com sometime offer free shipping when a gift is mailed directly to the gift recipient. Some websites offer gift wrap service. Take advantage of these holiday perks to save time and money.

One cheap and easy gift or party favor idea is a personalized CD. Holiday themed music can be downloaded cheaply and copied to many CD‘s. Personalized CD‘s can include recipes, holiday greetings personal photo’s or anything else you think the recipient would enjoy. Another cheap gift idea is to print a calendar with family photos to give to a loved one. One of the benefits of using your own printer along with a calendar program is that you can customize the calendar to include family birthdays and anniversaries.

I appreciate Christmas cards with their variety of humor, beautiful artwork and elegant verse and the fact that someone took the time to send me a card. I appreciate holiday cards right up to the moment I dump them in the trash. At the risk of sounding unsentimental, holiday cards are just more paperwork floating around my home. I would welcome a holiday email as warmly as I would welcome the paper version.

For those on your Christmas card list who somehow managed to ignore the computer age buying blank cards at an office supply store is a cheap option. By using the clip art that should have come with your computer or buying a program from American Greetings or Hallmark you can use your home printer to print only the number of holiday cards needed. Any blank cards left over can be used later for anything from party invitations to birthday cards.

This time of year magazines bombard us with images to remind us that the holidays are a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Before forking over three to five dollars for a magazine, I click on the online version of the magazine that caught my eye. Recipes can be had for free on websites such as all recipes.com. Martha Stewart Living is always a great online inspiration for the holidays for decorating.

When the chaos of the holiday seasons starts to feel overwhelming, just remember that inspiration, resources and money saving tools are just a click away.

Gifts for People Who Get on Your Nerves

Holiday gift giving is supposed to embrace the spirit of gracious giving. Of course it’s much more satisfying to give a gift acquired at a great discount, but sometimes even the best deal can’t compensate for the irritation you feel when buying a gift for someone you don’t like. Because of circumstance, family relations, a desire to keep the peace and/or keep their job sometimes the giver is forced to buy gifts for people she would rather buy a one way ticket out of town for. Here is the Cheap Diva’s list of gift for people who get on your nerves.  Read the rest of this article.

For celebrity obsessed premium cable TV watching couch potato in you life who spends more time talking incessantly about fictional characters on TV than real people, tell them your Christmas gift to them is a donation to PBS made in their honor. Please try to keep a straight face when you tell them, and be ready to explain what PBS is because it’s probably the only thing on TV they aren’t familiar with.

For the in debt up to their designer sunglasses couple for whom the motto bigger is better clearly applies to their pretentious McMansion and all the other high priced goodies they like to flaunt, a book by Dave Ramsey on financial responsibility or any book on getting out of debt would be a much needed but probably unwelcome wake up call. A DVD called America’s Castles takes a look at some of the greatest and grandest homes in America. Unless the couple in question happens to own one of the homes featured, this DVD would bring a much needed reality check to their grand illusions.

For the boss who doesn’t seem to understand that when he dumps a last minute project that takes an hour to complete on your desk at 4:45 it will not be done by 5:00, a book on time management might be the clue he needs to get work to you in a more timely manner. If that fails, buy him a Dilbert daily calendar starring a boss that is just as clueless as the one you have and see if he notices the resemblance.

Of course an all purpose gift for people you don’t like is the frequently mocked fruit cake. The traditional fruit cake is as thick and heavy as a brick. No one is really sure what is on the inside of the cake since it takes a hack saw to slice through one. Who knows, repeatedly giving a fruit cake to someone you don’t like might result in them insisting on not exchanging gifts in the future. Happy holidays!

It's the Thought that Counts, a guide to Savvy Gift Giving

Many shoppers eager to get the holiday shopping experience over with often buy gifts without thinking about the appropriateness of the gift just to have something for the recipient to unwrap at Christmas.  Don't do this!  The unluck recipient may get stuck with the gift.  Many stores will not accept a return without a reciept.  If the store does offer a store credit it will be for the current selling price (the item is probably on clearance by now) instead of the full price that was paid for it.  A good shopping strategy will help to avoid this and other gift giving mistakes.  Read the rest of this article.

Creative Ways of Giving Thanks

Amazoncom_cherish_mini_journal_80_3 Cherish Mini Journal $8.00

Before December, when the chaos of Christmas shopping escalates to maximum stress levels, there is that little holiday called Thanksgiving.  It's a time to reflect on all we are grateful for, instead of all the stuff we hope to get.  One popular tradition is to have everyone seated at the Thanksgiving table talk briefly about what they are thankful for.  This attitude of gratitude usually dissipates shortly after the last person finishes talking about what they are grateful for and guests' attention shifts to being grateful that  no one has snarfed down the last of the coveted mashed potatoes.

For small intimate gatherings where adding a gift for each guest won't break the bank, consider giving gratitude journals as a party favor.  It's one party favor that keeps the spirit of the celebration alive long after Thanksgiving is over.  Encourage guests to write in the journal regulary, especially when they are stressed or bored

Another way to expand on the theme of thanks is to encourage guest to bring a nonperishable food item to the Thanksgiving gathering to be donated to a local food pantry or bring fun treats like cookies to be donated to a local womens' shelter.

For the hostess who looks at preparing an elaborate feast as more manual labor than a labor of love, go with a "Im thankful I'm not doing dishes" Thanksgiving theme.  Gather guests at a nice restaurant and enjoy each others company and a tasty meal that allows everyone to relax knowing that the pile of dirty dishes they are generating will be taken care of by someone else.  After the meal take advantage of all that time saved by not cooking and cleaning by playing games, watching a movie or doing something else fun.

The best palce to get direction for what to buy for a gift comes from the person recieving it.  If you need inspiration try making casual small talk, asking the person you are buying for about their interests.  For example, you can mention that you are having people over for the holidays and ask them if they have any great cooking and entertaining ideas.  If they say they don't cook, shift the conversation to hobbies, good books to read, favorite movies or favorite ways to relax etc.

Do not go into a store and ask what 10 year old boys are asking for this year.  Adult or child, different people have different interests.  If you are asking a parent a parent of a child for gifts ideas for that child, ask for more than one gift idea.  The video game the parent suggests may be twice as much as you were thinking of paying, or it might have a parental warning label on it for content.  It's always good to have a backup.

Know what you are buying.  If the item comes in a box, take it out of the box to be sure it has all the parts and is not damaged.  Does the gift come with everything it needs or will it need batteries or some sort of accessories?  Look at the care label of the item.  Not everyone is willing to pay for dry cleaning.  Some pieces of clothing can't be cleaned at all!

Start shopping now!  If you are ordering an item from a web site or catlalog, the earlier you order the item the better your chances of getting it on time.  If the item is going to be delayed you can usually find out far enough ahead of time to make other arrangements.  Save your reciepts in an envelope.  If the item goes on sale before you give it to the recipient, call the store to find out if you take the item and the reciept to the store if they will give you a credit or cash for the difference.

No one likes to think of their gift being returned, but just in case a big fluffy pink pastel sweater with white elephants parading across the bust is not what the recipient wanted (yes I actually did recieve this fashion abomination as a gift once) it's a good idea to get a gift reciept from the cashier when paying for the item.  A gift reciept has the bar code for the item printed on it, but not the price of the item.  Leave all tags and labels on the item.  You can cross out the price, but leave the barcode intact.  If the recipient tries to return the item to the store without a barcode attached to it and the store has sold out of the item, the recipient probably won't be able to return it.

Spend money like a Scrooge and you can give gifts like you were Santa.  One of the cheapest ways to give small gifts is to turn yourself into a one woman assembly line and create multiples of the same item.  Gather and organize all of your supplies and see how fast you can crank out those hand made ornaments.  A personalized CD can be created by downloading songs off the internet.  For the technically illiterate, this is where having kids finally pays off.  Ask your offspring to download a list of songs you select to several CD's.  You can copy the songs over and over again and you only pay for the songs once.

Buy gifts far enough in advance so that you can choose the cheapest shipping method.  Many gifts can be sent in a standard letter envelope with the only shipping cost being a regular stamp.  Gifts that fit inside an envelope include tickets to a local sport or entertainment event, gift certificates for movies theatres, restaurants, local spas, magazine subscriptions, phone cards and online gift certificates for web sites such as Amazon.com.  A gift cetificate for a family portrait, a jewelry making class a local bead store, a cooking class or a class of their choice at the local community college, or a gift certificate toward services such as house cleaning  or professional organizing are fun and unexpected gift ideas.

Try to spend as little as possible on giftwrap so you can focus more of your money on the gift itself.  Gift bags of various sizes can be found at the dollar store for $1.00 a over the piece!  Maybe that's why they call it a dollar store.  While you're at the dollar store keep and eye open for coordinating tissue paper to fill all those bargian bags.

Skip the gift bag altogther and make the packaging part of the gift.  Stuff a pillowcase with whimsical pajamas, slippers, relaxing aromatherapy products, a blank journal or dream interpretation book, and a teddy bear.  A fabric wine serves as an attractive and resuable bag for candlesticks, a bottle of luxurious body lotion, or anything else that would fit inside of  it. Tie the open side of the filled pillowcase off with a elastic hair scrunchie.  A tote bag can be filled with great travel items like a travel alarm, a raincoat that folds into a pouch, empty travel bottle, enery bars, a makeup case, travel size toiletries, a disposable camera and of course an English to another language translation book/dictionary.  Theme baskets are a fun and creative way to personalize a gift.  A blanket, gourmet hot cocoa mix, marshmallows, a mug and good book to curl up with is ultimately a gift of comfort.  One of my favorite gifts to give is a cookie tin filled with cookie scented votive candles.  The Yankee candle company have a great selection of food scented candles around the winter holidays.

For a truly personalized gift, create a calendar with family photos using your computer or have it done at the local copy center.  To personalize it even more, mark the calender with stickers indicating birthdays and anniversaries within the family.

For the person who has everything, maybe what they really need is a way to organize their stuff.  Plastic bins especially designed to hld holiday ornaments or an upright container designed to hold wrapping paper and wrapping supplies are useful and appropriate holiday gifts.

One easy way to handle a gift giving situation is to skip the gift exchange altogether with select friends and family and spend money on a shared experience instead.   Attend a theatrical production, share a meal at a favorite restaurant, or do a day spa together to relax and recover from the holidays.

Cable Knits make Cozy Accents

Hair Color to Dye for

Clairol_natural_instincts_haircol_4 While colder weather brings with it a return to deeper colors like deep plum, for the lips, eyes and nails,  even the most ardent beauty queen will often overlook the one place where an application of rich color has potential to dramatically improve her look.  I am talking about hair color.  Dramatic eye and lip colors make dull faded hair color even more obvious.  Hair color can be given a boost by deepening hair color to a rich chocolate shade, adding a little spice with red undertones or brightening up your blond then following up the color treatment  by keeping hair properly conditioned and shiny.  Read the rest of this article.

For those of you concerned about potential hair color horrors, like the time I dyed my hair too frequently and it turned bright a bright scary orange, try a non-permanent color formula within a few shades of your natural color.  I like Natural Instincts from Clairol for it's price (less than $8.00 at mass retailers) and the natural looking (no bright orange) results.  This ammonia free hair color adds a layer of color to your hair that gradually washes out in about 28 shampoos so the color disappears in a gradual less obvious way than permanent hair color.  In other words, you won't have the skunk stripe thing going on where your hair is parted a few weeks after applying the color.   To keep your new hair color in your hair only, dab petroleum jelly around hairline and ears to prevent any hair dye absorping into the skin before applying any kind of hair color.

Don't be a Holiday Martyr!

The holidays bring out the best in some people, the worst in others, and the martyr in far too many. You know who I’m talking about. Those put upon holiday host and organizers who take on responsibilities they don’t want to because they feel they have to. For holiday martyrs orchestrating a holiday meal is simply unpaid labor, not a labor of love. Martyrs are driven by fear, not a desire to share in the holidays with loved ones. Fear of breaking with traditions, fear of confrontation with friends and family, fear that others will think badly of her drive the martyr to volunteer for a major undertaking that none of her guests has a problem dodging.

Here is a message to all of you holiday martyrs from those of us who are tired of hearing you complain. Stop whining and start delegating! No one forced you to spend hours cleaning, decorating and cooking. Taking on all of this work in an effort to make others happy while allowing your resentment to build is not a recipe for holiday cheer. The trick to delegating unmotivated guests into helping requires tact, strategy, and more sugar coating than a Christmas cookie.  Read the rest of this article.

Try flattery when informing your guests of the change in plans to shift more of the responsibility for the holiday meal onto them. Blatant flattery is a no so subtle approach that even the most determined freeloader would have a hard time arguing with it. For the guests with any cooking talent at all, give them a family recipe and tell them you know they’ll do it justice, or simply ask them to bring a side dish gushing enthusiastically about how you just know they’ll come up with something great. For the guests with no cooking talent at all, suggest they buy a pie or two, or bring vegetables or other ingredients for the salad. Be gracious in telling them you appreciate their help.

One easy way to get help with the decorating is to have a tree trimming party. Serve nonalcoholic beverages for the first hour or so. Drinking and holiday decorating don’t mix. Bring out enough decorations to keep your guests busy for at least an hour. They can decorate the tree or string garland around stair banisters. Give your guests a choice between a few simple decorating tasks. Then give them supplies and a few helpful suggestions to get them started. Giving the guests a choice makes them feel like a volunteer instead of a servant. Set aside the more fragile decorations to handle yourself. After about and hour or an hour and a half, check progress, set out snacks and more drinks and be sure to admire and compliment your guests on their handiwork.

Another approach is to make it sound like you are doing your guests a favor by volunteering to co-host a progressive dinner instead of hosting the entire meal. Be sympathetic and understanding in your correspondence when you talk about how busy everyone is this time of year. With so many obligations competing for everyone’s time and attention a progressive dinner would allows guests to spend one or all three courses of a meal together. Whatever their schedule allows. Set specific times for each course, allowing about an hour for each course. Volunteer for the appetizer, main course or dessert course making it clear that you expect other people to volunteer for the two other courses.

Resist the urge to apologize. As long as you have made an effort to come up with reasonable alternatives to you doing all the work and have notified your guests of the change weeks in advance you have nothing to apologize for. Now sit back and enjoy the holidays for a change.
